Description
The Eugene Lesbian Oral History Project collection consists of interviews of 83 people for the Eugene Lesbian Oral History Project, conducted by Professor Judith Raiskin and Curator Linda Long at the University of Oregon starting in the summer of 2018.
Abstract
Interview conducted on Friday, September 4, 2020. Harriet discusses her first impressions coming to Eugene in 1978. Before moving to Eugene, Harriet received a letter from a friend living there, who describes the city. Harriet reads from the letter. Her friend describes Eugene as a liberal place with a large lesbian community. Harriet talks about being Jewish in Eugene and being a member of Baleboostehs. She discusses partying in the lesbian community. She discusses the Riviera Room, lesbian dances, and WYMPROV! She talks about butch/femme relationships. Harriet talks about losing a job because of her lesbianism. She discusses lesbian separatist land in Oregon, and specifically the WomanShare Collective. She talks about the homophobic ballot measures. She talks about an annual camp-out she coordinated and lesbian parties she coordinated. She believes oppression brought the LGBTQ community closer, but now that there is acceptance, a sense of community has been lost. Harriet finishes her interview with a discussion of aging and options for assisted living as lesbians age. Harriet ponders the enormous transition from homosexuality being categorized as a psychotic disorder, to being able to openly celebrate lesbianism. It has taken courage to live through this transition.
