Always smiling or playing some prank, Wes was one of the greatest drawing cards on the team. Playing his trird and last year on the varsity, Schulmerich was a deciding factor in many contests. His clever base-running, fielding and work at bat featured every contest. With his long, timely home runs and sensational catches in the outfield, coupled with flashy base-pilfering, Wes filled the position vacated by former captain Escallier in great style."--1928 Beaver yearbook
