- Hand tinted image. Otaue shinji (Rice planting rites) in Sumiyoshi taisha in Osaka. The rites are an annual even in June. A row of Japanese women in ceremonial dress take part in rice planting rites. The womenin the procession wear special ceremonial costumes, decorative hats and hold fans. A row of men are holding large umbrellas over the women . The men wear hats, white ceremonial garments, and sandals. A crowd of people are partially visible behind the procession. In the distance are individuals dressed in Euro-American clothing and hats. Trees are visible in the background.
