Description
Hand tinted image. The parade of the colorful floats in Gion Festival in Kyoto on July 17. An elaborately decorated parade float in the shape of a ship and known as a hoko travels down a crowded street in downtown Kyoto. The float is supported on large wooden wheels. Flags with animals on their surface hang from the back of the float. A large, wooden phoenix is situated on the front of the float. A group of musicians ride on the float seated underneath a decorative roof.Men and musicians on the float are dressed in traditional cotton summer kimonos. Along the street beneath are spectators, some of whom are holding parasols, and some of them are wearing hats. Also visible in the image are blocks of wood under the float, wooden buildings, electrical poles, electrical lines, ropes, and roofing tiles.
