The photographer, John Bacher, came to th United States from Switzerland in 1903 and came to Portland in 1905 because of interest in the Lewis & Clark Centennial. He operated Portland's Swiss Floral Company from 1906-1958 and introduced through his laborers new planting designs throughout Oregon. He was a founding member of the American Rhododendron Society.
