The Storyteller commemorates author Ken Kesey (1935-2001) and depicts Kesey reading to his grandchildren, Kate, Caleb, and Jordan. The statue is designed so that people can sit on the bench. A plaque on the work quotes a passage from Kesey's novel, Sometimes a Great Notion.
Peter Helzer received an M. F. A. degree in sculpture (1983) from the University of Oregon. He operates a bronze foundry in Dexter, Oregon.
