Senator Frank W. Hastings, son of Port Townsend founder Loren B. Hastings, began construction on the house in 1889 but bankruptcy forced him to curtail the project in 1891. Hastings sold the house in 1904 to Mr. Olsen, the county tax assessor, who completed construction. Olsen rented a room to the German Consul from 1908 to 1911.
