Born in Ohio, Howard C. Stratton (born 1861) moved to Oregon in c. 1875 and graduate from the Albany, Oregon, Collegiate Institute. He moved to Portland in 1880 and after working for the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company as a purchasing agent became employed at the Portland Savings Bank. In 1900 he moved to California where he became successful in in a variety of ventures, including oil field exploitation. He was director of the Palmer Oil Company and president of the Stratton Water Company. Source: Notables of the Southwest, Press Reference Library (Los Angeles Examiner, 1912).
