Jef Gunn is a painter, printmaker and sometimes sculptor, who has worked in Portland, Oregon. Gunn attends to the relationship between consciousness and the phenomenal world, expressed in simple large forms of Nature drawn from memory of experience in wilderness and urban environs, concentrated into shapes, text, pattern and signs. 'I don't know if I care much about self expression. In relation to the wilderness or the city, what is a self? Art is mind revealing mind.'

Susan, my wife, is from Central Michigan, from the Chippewa River. In the summer that river took my attention. I sensed the deep source within the current (she told me there is a spring in the river), and also a presence in the air of the morning hot forest. After painting this I found a reproduction of a piece by Christoforo Simone Del Crocefissi (A.D. 1350) called "The Dream of the Virgin." She is asleep on a bed of red and gold brocade in a black (!) gown. And from her belly the "Tree of Redemption" springs. (Gunn, 1995)
