Note
My platinum prints are made by contact from 8 x 10 inch negatives. They are hand-coated on fine art paper. I have chosen this outmoded printing method because platinum has a greater capacity than commercial silver-based papers to register the long tonal scale available in a negative, particulary the gradation in middle and high value. The great appeal of platinum prints lies in their beauty, in the luminosity of print values. The prints are tactile objects in themselves, full of the impression of substance and atmosphere. Biographical Information
SKUNK CABBAGE, MAPLETON, OREGON, 1981: Each spring I marvel at the valiant performance of skunk cabbage, at the very splendor of her regal costume. From frosted bogs unfurl greatcoats of deepest emerald, which soon disclose flaming buds jubilant in anticipation of spring. Sometimes gazing at Skunk Cabbage I envision Amazon parrots squabbling on a limb; other times I am reminded of a flock of hens, tails upturned, enacting some ritual barnyard ballet! Always I am fascinated by reflections which give shadow substance, thereby disturbing intrinsic reality. Above all I love the dancing forms, the surrender to sunshine, and the stillness. The mystery of how vital substance possibly could prevail upon water, how such beauty could arise apparently out of nowhere, fills the heart with affirmation. (Harding, 1990)
