Description
A platinum/palladium-toned photograph centered from inside a "beach cave," which consists of a formation of rocks as an archway. Looking out to the beachfront and sea the viewer encounters more rocks laying in what may be the sand, land-fog or sea waves. The misty faded background makes it difficult to tell which element is in place. Beach Cave; Cannon Beach; 8 x 10 inches; 1982; Platinum/Palladium print The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. Note
My platinum prints are made by contact from 8 x 10 inch negatives. They are hand-coated on fine art paper. I have chosen this outmoded printing method because platinum has a greater capacity than commercial silver-based papers to register the long tonal scale available in a negative, particulary the gradation in middle and high value. The great appeal of platinum prints lies in their beauty, in the luminosity of print values. The prints are tactile objects in themselves, full of the impression of substance and atmosphere. Biographical Information
BEACH CAVE. CANNON BEACH, OREGON, 1982: Crablike forms, ocean-spawned, emerge from a pebbled beach, then lumber back to a protoplasmic sea. Beach Cave evokes a primordial recognition of the ocean's fecundity. The image presents a visual equivalent for the experience of giving birth. Within this heroic landscape masculine and feminine elements seem fused, spiritually as well as physically. Such dynamic interactions often elude our eyes; here the camera, with its ability to gather light over time, reveals underlying harmonies. (Harding, 1990)
