A black and white print made with sumi-e ink. The shades vary, with complete black at the top of the print and some strokes starting near the left. The right, bottom, and left edges are a middle gray.

Born in New York in 1911, sculptor Hilda Morris studied at the Cooper Union School of Art and the Art Students League. Moving to Portland in 1941 with her husband, Carl Morris, she continued her 3-dimensional work and developed a personal style of calligraphy taken from traditional sumi techniques. She is represented in museum collections throughout the United States, her major commissions include the Rochester Memorial Museum of Art, New York, the Seattle Opera House, the Standard Plaza in Portland, and the Pacific National Building in Tacoma.
