Biographical Information
I make my photographs with a "Diana" toy camera. Its uncorrected plastic lens; one shutter speed; a choice of three apertures, and an adjustable focus, 4-6 ft, 6-12 ft, and 12 ft - infinity make the Diana not only technically simple, but also allow for spontaneity and an unmeditated response. Diana photographs, vignetted glowing images pull you into their radiating centers, into a collective sense of memory, ritual, and dream. In printing my photographs 3 feet x 3 feet, I accentuate the physical structure of the photographic grain. At this degree of enlargment, the image is splintered into a myriad of sharp dots which seem to be forming the image as well as dissolving it. (Gilson, 1991)
