I find photographers basically voyeuristic, it's a nature of the craft; to see the world through a lens; to spend time looking, discovering. My imagery is discovered, not staged, and composed wholly in the viewfinder. I use a "normal" lens, since that is how my eye sees, and I do not use auxiliary lighting. Everything is composed in the viewfinder as it is discovered, as it exists. And in this process of discovery, I am able to discover my own spirit, the feelings in my soul. Over the years my fascination with the beauty and spirit of wooden boats has not diminished. My fascination with line and form and reflected light that makes up the composition of an image has grown. "Black, White, Red & Yellow" is more a study of visual composition than a study of wooden boats. I find that interest in compositional study in all my photographic subjects from forms in nature to building structures. Yet I do always find myself attracted to water, the white noise sound of water and the spirit of wood. (Hughey, 1991)
