I work from an extensive collection of sketches and photographs taken on our hiking trips through the Cascades, the Southwest, and the Alps. The photos serve as memory guide only. I seek a poetic rather than a literal translation of reality. A ""felt"" sense of a place, its scale, and rhythm. Color and painterly possibility interest me. A landscape evokes a temperature and a mood. It reflects drama and the energy of the elemental forces that helped shape it. (Liepe, 1985.)
