Nelson Sandgren (1918-2006) was born in Manitoba, Canada. Sandgren moved to Portland with his parents during the Great Depression, and taught art/painting at Oregon State College for thirty-nine years.

I attempted to do a kind of patriotic piece, using basically the colors from the American flag. The painting expresses a relaxed time spent in a boat, just floating along summer waters, free from care, work and tension. (Sandgrin, 1985)
