Description
This painting is divided into three sections. The foreground is comprised of a red rectangular form that enters the picture plane from the lower right-hand corner, and it contains several enigmatic items. The middleground is composed of a section of alternating light and dark stripes, reminiscent of strip-farmed land, and it contains what appears to be a floral form and a pair of scissors. The background is divided into left and right by two sections of red and blue alternating stripes, separated in the middle by a black abyss. Biographical Information
I thought of the still-life as being something like a stage with dramatic incidents occurring upon it. The small still-life objects, some disrupted and floating, are contrasted to the massiveness of the table and the solidaity of the dark mountain. The general theme is about the fragility and temporal quality of life. (Johanson, May 10, 1984)
