Biographical Information
For the Food Innovation Center I have installed two public art projects; an interior installation on the west lobby wall and an outdoor piece on the north corner of the plaza. Both of these pieces contain sculptural elements that not only refer to the context of the facility but also reflect the Oregon landscape. They not only compliment each other but also respond to the architecture of the Food Innovation building. ""Valley"" installed on the plaza alludes to the topography of the area's landscape; referring to valley (and water), mountain, forest and orchard. The focal point of this sculptural work is a large vessel form ( a hybrid bowl/funnel), symbolizing the productive valley region. The flow of water down the ""sides of the valley slope"" is accentuated during periods of rain, gently distributed at the basin's smaller opening. Constructed out of stainless steel, the clean and precise form is elevated by boulders of locally quarried Camas Basalt. Symbolizing the treed regions of the state, a pairing of diagonal elements rest against the side of the ""bowl"". The more calligraphic line is a singular branch from a cherry tree that has been cast in bronze. The second linear element, turned out of redwood, is more uniform; with it's tapered dimension suggestive of the forest's more vertical growth. The outdoor piece not only symbolizes the surrounding landscape, but more obviously suggests food processing activities.
