The courtyard formed by Aspen Hall, Baker Hall and the entrance to the remodeled food complex is not only a literal junction for pedestrians, it is a figurative junction for generations, cultures and personalities. "Junction" turns the Cascade Complex courtyard into a metaphor for Southern Oregon State College being both a microcosm of, and junction in, life. It consists of thirty nine standard highway signs and two traffic signals fastened to all three walls. Influenced by the viewer's age, personality, imagination and life-experience, the shapes, colors and images of the signs juxtapose to offer various "readings" on decision-making, purpose, doubt, accident, discovery and balance.(Mayer, 1993)
