Bergama/Leipzig also has an overall rug motif that is found on Bergama type rugs. Underneath are various elements relating to a visit I made to Leipzig last year where I was invited to exhibit my work. The fact that I was invited is interesting. As a Jew born in Germany, my family and I had to leave Berlin (where I was born) when Hitler came into power. The details of which are a different story, but suffice it to say that present-day Germans are making great efforts to compensate in some small ways for what happened during the Nazi regime. I was determined not to ever set foot in Germany, but was persuaded over a couple of years to consent to a show. In actual fact it was a mostly positive experience because the owner of the gallery I showed at was an exceptional person. Again in this piece, elements under the rug design have to be searched out: a map of Leipzig, a Hundertausser water bottle label, Nordsec, a fast food fish bar, some billboard lettering, tourist attractions, etc. (Caron, 1998.)
