The sixteen concrete planters were commisioned to compliment the building's architectural statement and the other art pieces. The planters had originally been specified from a commercial factory in California, but the Selection Committee chose instead to give the opportunity of producing the planters to Northwest craftspeople. (Gordinier, 1983)
