The columns will be fabricated in solid, reinforced concrete, 22 feet high and 4 feet 6 inches in diameter. The proposal budget includes all costs associated with their constuction: engineering, demolition, excavation, haul-off, foundation, forms, concrete, rebar, inspections, and clean-up. They will be fabricated to my specifications that will allow for a 12 inch lip at the top and bottom, three-eigths inch deep. This will allow the tile/setting material to fill in this gap so the columns will be a continuous plane from top to bottom. It's also important to protect the tile edge to edge from weather, maintenance equipment, etc. The one foot lip will provide this protection. The mosaic tile used for this project will be unglazed porcelain ceramic tile and glass tile manufactured both by U.S. and international sources of at least one hundred colors. The mortar for the tile will be a premium latex modified portland cement thinset. The grout will be a sanded cementitious grout and there will be approximately fifteen colors of grout used to enhance the visual impact of the design. Porcelain and glass tile require low maintenance, they are water resistant, fire resistant, and extremely durable (Mandel, 2004 artist proposal).
