Biographical Information
MY INTEREST IN LARGE-SCALE PUBLIC WORK IS TO CREATE SCULPTURE THAT NOT ONLY RELATES TO ITS SETTING AND CULTURAL CONTEXT, BUT ALSO SERVES TO CREATE A PLACE OR CONTEXT OF ITS OWN. THE SCULPTURE, WHICH I HAVE DEVELOPED AND PROPOSE, IS A MONUMENTAL SCULPTURAL REPRESENTATION OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN FISHING WEIR. THIS SCULPTURE WILL SERVE TO PROVIDE AN IDENTIFIABLE SPACE OF ITS OWN. PEOPLE WILL NOT ONLY VIEW THE SCULPTURE, BUT ALSO INTERACT WITH IT ON A DAILY BASIS. THE SCULPTURE IS INTENDED TO BE WALKED THROUGH, SAT IN AND AROUND AND ULTIMATELY TO FUNCTION AS A MEETING SPACE AND UNOFFICIAL HUB OF THE COMMUNITY. IT IS THIS IDENTIFIABLE PUBLIC SPACE, WHICH DRAWS PEOPLE TOGETHER AND BREAKS US AWAY FROM THE HOMOGENOUS MODERN WORLD. JUST AS THE WEIR IS INTENDED TO GATHER TOGETHER, SO IS THE SCULPTURE'S PURPOSE TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER. IT SEEMS FITTING IN A VALLEY THAT HAS HELD THE SAME FUNCTION FOR SO LONG.
