The Chain was photographed in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, between 1993 and 1999. It was exhibited at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and La Biennale de Venezia in 2001, and at the Bienal de São Paulo in 2002. Chien-Chi Chang, a New York-based photographer born in Taiwan, is a member of Magnum Photos. His previous book is I do I do I do.
