A Native American woman, identified as Ruth Coyote of the Cayuse tribe, stands supporting a cradleboard on her right. In the cradleboard, laced up to its neck, is an infant wearing a frilled cap. The baby's head is supported by a headrest. The top of the cradleboard is decorated with beads and a stylized floral applique. Ruth Coyote is wearing a plain dress with a dark and light striped collar. She is wrapped in a plaid shawl. Her hair is braided and tied with ribbons. The backdrop is a light blanket with stripes at each end. Another blanket with geometric designs is at the bottom of the photograph.

An outside photograph of a young woman dressed in her regalia holding a child in a beaded cradleboard. She has been identified as Ruth Coyote and the child is unidentified. She is wearing a wing dress with a shawl wrapped around her left shoulder and under her right arm. She is holding in her right arm a child in a floral beaded cradleboard with a loop necklace on the front of the child. The child looks as if it is asleep. The child is sitting on a wool blanket on top of an unidentified object. They are in front of a blanket backdrop that is tacked down on to a wooden frame in front of a wooden fence. Writing on the photograph is at her knees "Ruth Coyote and Papoose Cayuse Tribe Maj. Moorhouse".
