During the late 19 th , and early 20 th century it became popular to make these rank squares entirely of metallic couched threads as seen in this badge. The couching stitch was used due to the delicate nature of the metallic threads. Couching involved laying down the metallic threads on the surface and anchoring them in position with an embroidered silk thread. The contrasting red thread was used to enhance the beauty of the metal.
