Note
Civil Rank Badge of blues, golds, lilac and red silks in long and short stitch and satin stitch with couched metallic threads. This Mandarin Square features a 5th rank Silver Pheasant perched and looking up at the sun disk, which is a symbol of rising high. The direction that the bird is facing toward the sun indicates that this badge would have been worn by a male. _ The bird is surrounded by Buddhist emblems, symbols of luck, with a border of bats and shou characters. The shou character is a symbol of longevity and bats are a symbol of luck. The separation down the center indicates that this is a front jacket badge. A close look reveals that the bird has been appliqued onto the background. This technique was widely used in the late 19 th century as it provided an easy way to change ones rank by simply switching out the birds. _
