Note
Civil Rank Badges of bright blues, greens, white and gold silks in a satin stitch and long and short stitch with couched metallic gold vine tendrils on the background and border. The 8 th rank Quail is crowded among an ornate palette of Buddhist emblems, bats, and puffy clouds. The slanted lines beneath the waves are called ?lishui?, and represent the greatest depths of the ocean floor. These lines were added to the rank squares in the 19 th century and they mimic the design on the imperial dragon robes. The idea behind the design is that the emperor endowed a harmony of heaven and earth in his successful ruling. This is a complete set of two rank badges, one for the front of the jacket and the other for the back. _
