- Description
-
Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth President of the United States, was born in New York City, 1858. He was graduated from Harvard in 1880, and, after holding various minor political offices in New York, he moved in 1884 to North Dakota, where he lived the life of a ranchman. When Benjamin Harrison was President, Roosevelt was on the civil service commission, and did a great deal toward the extension of the merit system. His service during the Spanish-American War made him immensely popular. He was elected governor of New York on the Republican ticket, and in 1900 he was elected Vice-president. He died in 1919.
