- Note
- Hong Kong, an island off of the coast of China, was ceded to Great Britain in the 1800s. In the 1950s and 1960s labor and fabrics were cheaper in Hong Kong, and British tariffs were lenient. There was great interest in manufacture on the island, and by the 1940s, a budding garment industry developed with focus on European styles due to the British colonial influence. Asian imported clothing was prized for superior finishing techniques and beadwork.
