Yellow chitenje (pl. zitenje) cloth with portrait of Pope John Paul II repeated across the center. Each portrait is surrounded by the text "Pope John Paul II -- visit to Malawi, May 1989" and a blue border. Designs repeated across the top and bottom of the cloth incorporate the papal emblem (with two crossed keys and the Triregnum, or crown with three levels) and an emblem with a stylized cross and the letter M. Other designs include a stylized letter "J" and a cord.
