Description
Manuscript codex. Collation: Quires of 12. No signatures or catchwords. Decoration: Lombardic capitals in same ink as text; occasional sketches in margins (pointing hand, sword). Some spaces left for initial letters that were not executed. Binding: Half parchment, covers have tan paper diapered with crescents and dots in brown. 5 sewing stations, sewn in very heavy thread. Script: Rounded semi-Gothic minuscule in brown ink, annotations in 15th c. bookhand, and some in italic cursive.
Provenance
Three inscriptions of ownership: 1. Jacobo Baptista, an Augustinian of Prato, in 1454. The manuscript therefore is earlier by some years than the first printed editions (Anderson Co.) of 1465 and 1470. 2. Typed label on cover in Italian: 1. Cicerone de officiiis. 2. Sallustio, Catilinaria et jugurtina. Ms. cart. Lat. del sec. XV, non num. in carattere gotico con numerose note marginali, in 4. 50,00. 3. Edward Sandford Burgess purchased from booksellers Davis and Orioli, London, in 1919. Donation/Purchase ; Julia Burgess, 1935-1942.
