Grover Caldwell at Roseland, Oregon - 1907The Caldwell brothers were sons of Joseph and Laura (Cornwell) Caldwell, members of the Oregon section of the ill-fated Donner Party emigrant train of 1846, the Calif. section of which were marooned in the snow at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, most of them starving to death. Members of the Oregon section of the train settled near Oakland, Ore.

Ezra Meeker and His Oxen ""at the End of the Oregon Trail"" dedication at the Union Street Park in 1906. Meeker, Mrs. Wentworth Lord and Henry Steers are easily recognizable. The Dalles is the real ""End of the Oregon Trail."" Other places have no right to such a claim. The long emigrant wagon trains were disassembled here. Emigrants whose destinations were west of the Cascades generally completed their journey by floating down the Columbia in roughly constructed boats or on log rafts. The stock and wagons were taken over the Barlow trail south of Mt. Hood.
