Abed (Class of 1962) was the first international student to serve as president of ASOSU. After graduating from OSU, he received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. He was a longtime official with the International Monetary Fund, and served as director of its Middle Eastern Department from July 2002 to December 2003. He later served as the chairman of the Palestine Monetary Authority and most recently as the Institute of International Finance as a senior counselor and director for Africa and the Middle East.
Photo was published in the March 1962 issue of the Oregon Stater, page 13. Ira pitched from1961-63, and was an All-American the latter twoyears. He signed with the Chicago Whitesox and played minor league baseball. Ira was elected to the Oregon State Athletic Hall of Famein 1991. Ira's coach at Portland's Franklin high school was Gene Tanselli, who played baseball for OSU from 1949-1951. Tanselli succeeded Ralph Coleman at OSU, coaching the Beaver baseballers from 1967-1972.

Bill Winkler, the swim coach and assistant professor of P. E., shakes hands with Jerry Wille, an All American swimmer and co-captain of the swimming team. Bill Winkler is an emeritus professor for the College of Public Health and Human Services and the former OSU swim coach. Winkler formed the Faculty/Staff Fitness program in 1984.
