Dennis Oppenheim lives in New York, N. Y. He was born in Electric City, Washington, and attended California College of Arts and Crafts, where he received a BFA degree in 1965. He moved to new York in 1966, where he taught preschool and later high school art while working towards his first single exhibition, which was held in 1968. Oppenheim creates conceptual art, performance art, earth works and mechanical pieces, producing a wide range of sculpture. To commemorate the Historic Alsea Bay Bridge which was designed by Conde McCullough in the 1930's and was replaced by a new bridge in 1992, the Oregon Arts Commission selected Susan Springer Werschkul to create a tile mural on the exterior of the Interpretive Center in Waldport. In addition to a handmade tile wall measuring 55 feet in length and 10 feet in height, the community of Waldport became involved with the project by contributing tiles to honor relatives, ancestors and friends. During the 1930's, he trained in Prague to become a painter and decorator. He came to New York in 1938 to work on the Czech Pavilion for the World's Fair and never returned to his native country, kept out by the invasion of the Nazis in 1939 and the Communist takeover in 1948. He lived in Rio de Janeiro, and the countryside of Brazil for the next eleven years. He married in 1951, and he and his wife, Judith, moved to Victoria, British Columbia, which was her home.
