Old China and Young America is intended four young readers, and indeed, part II of this book (Young America) verges on sappy. The noteworthy aspect of this book, however, is that it was written by the wife, Sarah Pike Conger, of the U.S. ambassador to China during the Boxer Uprising. Mrs. Congers view of the Empress Dowager is unique. Some insights about Ci Xi (Empress Dowager) of whom Mrs. Pike was very fond.
