Valley Light
Description
"Valley Light" was inspired by the landscape of the Willamette Valley. The horizontal lines at the top represent the horizon lines. These break apart and fall to the bottom in the form of short vertical lines, symbolic of the fields and grasses. I was very interested in capturing the special light created when the sun comes through the dark clouds and illuminates the colors in the valley and hills. This piece is made from silk and cotton, dyed with procion (fiber reactive) dyes. The background is machine pieced and appliqued cotton. The strips are pieced from silk which are sewn into tubes, these are then turned inside out and ironed flat into strips. The strips are attached to the piece only at the top and hang freely in front of the back. They are held out from the back with a wooden bar which slips into a sleeve at the top.
