""Ashwood, Outpost of 50 Years Ago"" When Bend attained the status of a village 50 years ago, Ashwood was a booming mining town in Crook county. This picture, taken about 30 years ago, shows the community store that was a busy place when such mines as the ""Oregon King"" and the ""Morning Star"" were in full operation, and men combed the hills for new outcrops. Some of Bend's early-day residents came here from Ashwood, named for Ash Butte, visible in the background.
