""Ashwood, Outpost of 50 Years Ago"" When Bend attained the status of a village 50 years ago, Ashwood was a booming mining town in Crook county. This picture, taken about 30 years ago, shows the community store that was a busy place when such mines as the ""Oregon King"" and the ""Morning Star"" were in full operation, and men combed the hills for new outcrops. Some of Bend's early-day residents came here from Ashwood, named for Ash Butte, visible in the background.

""He Drove Golden Spike"" This historic picture was taken on Oct. 5, 1911, when James J. Hill, ""Empire Builder"" who engaged E.H. Harriman in a $25,000,000 railroad battle in the rugged Deschutes gorge, came to Bend to drive the golden spike that marked the completion of the gorge lines to Bend. Hill is pictured here in a speech near the site of the railroad station. It was a warm October day, with thousands present from all parts of Oregon.
