Frederick Heidel's 1985 exhibition list., Former chairman of the art & architecture department and professor of art at Portland State University for over 25 years, Frederick Heidel is well known and respected for his work in glass and acrylic paintings. Throughout his career, Heidel has exhibited widely including major shows at the San Francisco Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum, University of Oregon Art Museum, Smith/Anderson Gallery, Palo Alto, CA and Glasgalene Kuhler, Amsterdam, Holland. The artist has also been awarded numerous commissions and is included in many public and private collections. A painter, Heidel began working in glass in 1967 after receiving a Chapelbrook Foundation Grant to work in the glass factories in Holland. Since that time, the artist has traveled to the studios of Glassobjekte Van Tetterode to execute glass sculpture from drawings he has prepared in his Portland studio. The exploration of this medium has lead Heidel to create sculpture of painted light and the nuances of the colorful laminated glass harkens to the painterly and fluid surfaces of his paintings. Heidel's works on paper reflect the translucent quality of his glass sculpture. This document was acquired after the award date and covers periods subsequent to the project., Judith Poxson Fawkes, a resident of Portland, Oregon, is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art. She taught weaving at four institutions of higher education, most recently at Lewis and Clark College, Portland. Her fifty-six commissions hang in such diverse locations as a Federal courthouse, hospitals, university and school buildings, corporations and businesses, a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship, residences in Saudi Arabia and Paris, and in a jail lobby. Sixty-three tapestries are in public collections. She is a recipient of a WESTAF/NEA Regional Fellowship for Visual Artists, an Individual Artists' Fellowship from the Oregon Art Commission and a Crafts Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts. She has written a book entitled "Weaving a Chronicle," described as a visual and written catalog by a working tapestry weaver. Forty-six tapestries, pictured in color, are accompanied by adjacent text describing the reasons for each work's creation. Stories of the tapestries revisit commissions and exhibitions. Each tapestry represents seminal ideas in one of six series. The tapestries contribute to the chronicle of how ideas are conceived and executed-- adding to the history of American art and craft, and to the definition of contemporary tapestry. 2 p. Russell Childers' 1991 biography., In 1970 Childers had a one man show that opened in the University Of Oregon Museum Of Art and has toured colleges, galleries and libraries in the Northwest including a very successful exhibit in Sapporo, Japan. His wood carvings are being purchased by museums and private collectors who gladly pay up to $2,000.00 for his pieces. Russell has truly gained recognition as a gifted artist. This was not always the case. On January 11, 1926 at the age at 10 has was committed to Fairview State Home for the Feeble Minded because of "fits" that quite possibly could have been epileptic seizures stemming from early childhood falls and several bouts with extremely high fevers. Records show that his first- and second- grade teachers regarded him as incorrigible. In those days that was enough reason to have a child institutionalized. While at Fairview he received several diagnoses including autism. Perhaps because of deafness he found it difficult to communicate so he was labeled as being retarded. As a former superintendent of Fairview, Merry McGee said, "When a person was labeled as retarded, all services ceased." Patients were fed and clothed but received no training. Russell spent the next forty years in silence. Russell is not sure when he started to carve but thinks it was during World War II. While thumbing through an issue of Life Magazine, he saw an illustration of a woodcarver at work and this triggered something in him. Woodcarving was Childers' only significant activity for most of the forty years he spent there. He was not allowed to have a knife for many years, so he sharpened bits of metal and with donated wood he eagerly created wooden cowboys, bartenders and bears for the ward attendants. He charged 50 cents for his work. In 1965, Pauline Lindell, one of the founders of Willamette Valley Rehabilitation Center felt that Russell was capable of "leading a more useful life" and helped in obtaining his release. Russell moved to Lebanon to reside in a foster home. At Willamette Valley Rehabilitation Center he was given a set of hearing aids, extensive reading and writing classes and a place to continue his carving. In his new open environment, Russell has thrived. He is paid a salary at the center, with which he shares the proceeds from his carvings. As he works at his bench, Russell will occasionally chat with workers who pass by, but his thoughts stay with the steady strokes of his coping saw as he shapes a piece of maple or oak into a delicate figure. His self-portraits and the poignant pre-Fairview family scenes are works of art. One of the most acclaimed is of Childers, a brother and an aunt who are sitting together on a bench the day before he was committed. As Jan Zach, retired professor of sculpture at the University of Oregon and a good friend of Russell, said a few years ago, "Russell's work is beautiful, it's absolutely astonishing." When asked, Russell thinks he does good work, but calls it a hobby -- one that he has pursued eight hours a day for a good part of his 73 years., The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. Suzanne Duryea has become known to Northwest art viewers for her rich oil paintings of animated objects personified in a narrative atmosphere of glowing color. Romantic yet humorous, these paintings emphasize a vigorous nature that is immortalized in pain, creating a symbolic tone. The glossy surfaces of the paintings on paper (22" x 30") become more textural on canvas as the actual working surface expands (7' x 5'). 5 p. Thomas Prochaska's exhibition list., Artist Thomas Prochaska grew up drawing and sketching in Illinois, and then earned a degree in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin. A full scholarship to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn found him studying printmaking and painting. After a couple of years of teaching at Pratt Graphics Center and at the University of Georgia, he followed his love for printmaking — and his Swiss girlfriend — to Europe. “That’s where I learned the most about printmaking, doing it every day and doing it in a real practical manner… in Switzerland, in a tiny town, St.Prix.” When visa problems sent him back to the U.S., he taught at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, visiting family in Oregon during the summers. “And so I fell in love with Portland,” he sighs with a smile. “I went from being a Department Chairman to being in the Saturday Market.” His woodcuts of trout and salmon — “I also came here for the fishing,” he adds — were eventually licensed for use on T-shirts. Popular ones. “That made me feel real happy because it was people’s art, art away from institutions,” Tom says. “In some ways, that was the most satisfying work I’ve ever done, because people wore them.” (excerpt from biography at http://www.pnca.edu/exposure/stories/28/tom-prochaska), The Oregon Arts Commission has ten Regional Arts Councils that provide delivery of art services and information. During the next ten years he was a social activist and worked for the Federal Education project in Connecticut. In the fall of 1947, Russo moved to Portland and was hired by the Museum Art School the following year to teach painting and art history, remaining on the staff until he retired in 1974. During his tenure at the Museum Art School he became known as Portland's most articulate voice of artists' political, social and artistic rights. 3 p. Thomas Anderson's 1995 exhibition list., Tom Anderson was born in 1951 in Salt Lake City, the son of a jazz musician. By the time the family settled in Vancouver, Washington, Anderson's formative years has been shaped by syncopated rhythm and life on the road (39 states by the age of four). He earned an Associate of Arts degree from Clark College in 1971. part of his education included three months of travel in Europe, where he studied firsthand the works of the great masters. In the autumn of 1971, he enrolled at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. There, in addition to his Asian art and Philosophy studies, Anderson made some meaningful contributions to the first years of the experimental college's development. He initiated the use of the 16mm animation facilities, helped to establish the FM Radio station KAOS, co-created the four-story library mural, and worked as an assistant graphic designer, developing the College's catalogs and visual identities. He graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. That same year, Anderson co-founded Mansion Glass Studios in Olympia. This collaboration won recognition locally and nationally for their design and fabrication of Architectural Art Glass commissions, as well as for their restoration projects. Anderson first attended the highly esteemed Pilchuck Glass School in 1986, as a teaching assistant to Henry Halem. He returned in 1987, on a scholarship with Susan Stinsmuhlen-Amend, and again in 1988 and 1989 as a teaching assistant in the advanced graduate program, specializing on glass casting and enamel kiln firing. In 1990, Anderson established his own studio in Olympia. Over the past eight years he has continued his work painting, metal fabrication, mixed media constructions, and printmaking. 4 p. Rick Bartow's 1995 exhibition list., The frailty of life on this planet and the need to recognize the interconnectedness of all species are common threads that weave through Bartow's work. His Yurok Indian heritage and his experiences in Vietnam are the source of these feelings and nurture his imagery. Crow/raven and a pantheon of other animals, including man, figure prominently in his work. He reanimates the ancient myths of Northwest peoples into his visual language. Once the symbol of rebirth and the spirit of all life, crow is a ghost-like figure in this monotype who knows "he" is no longer central to our lives. (OAC documentation, 1990). A Vietnam veteran and a Yurok tribal member, he addresses grief and fear in his work as means to dismantling them. His work is represented by Froelick Gallery and Stonington Gallery.
