Hand tinted image. An outdoor candid portrait of a Soochow Creek (Wusong Jiang) filled with boats transporting lumber. All the boats appear to be made of wood and are of various sizes and designs. People are seen on the boats operating long oars. On the left side of the image is a tall cement wall lined with railing. Wooden utility poles and pedestrians walking can be seen in front of tall buildings. In the background people travel over a steel bridge identified as the Garden Bridge, which spans the creek. Known as the Garden Bridge in English, the bridge remains an important transportation channel in metropolitan Shanghai. A British company built the bridge nearly a century ago in 1907. Today in China few people know the English name of the bridge but it is well known by its native name: Waibadu Qiao.

The man on the far right is clothed in a dark long-sleeved button-up shirt and dark pants. The man in the middle wears a dark button-up collared shirt and pair of overalls that are unbuttoned at the top. The man on the far left wears a white shirt under a dark, long-sleeved jacket. A body of water lies in the background.

Two ships unloading supplies on the Alaska Home Railway Wharf in Valdez, Alaska. Two large ships are docked side by side to a wooden pier. The larger ship that is docked closest to the pier has written on its bow "Portland of Port Townsend". The smaller ship next to the S.S. Portland has written on its bow "John C Potter Tacoma". In the foreground of the image are two men in dark garments and hats standing on boats looking at the camera. Five various small boats are floating in the water near the wharf. A wooden bridge is seen on the left hand side of the image, on which is the blurred motion of a moving vehicle. Three wooden buildings can be seen on the wharf as well as silhouetted figures behind the wooden buildings. A large snow-capped mountain range is partly visible through the clouds in the background.
