1 p. Christian 1992 Burchard's biography & exhibition list., Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1955, Christian has been living in the United States since 1978. Building on a foundation laid by a furniture makers apprenticeship in Germany in the middle seventies, he studied sculpture and drawing first at the Museum School in Boston and then at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver BC. In 1982 he and his wife, Micheline, opened Cold Mountain Studio in Southern Oregon. His early focus was on furniture and interiors, but gradually shifted to woodturning and sculpture, moving between vessel oriented forms and sculptural turning. His work has been included in most of the major turning related exhibits of the last ten years and is exhibited widely throughout the US. His pieces are part of many public and private collections. He is also sought after as a teacher and demonstrator at craft schools and conferences and related turning events. 1 p. Barry Gunderson's 1986 biography., Barry Gunderson has been a Professor of Studio Art at Kenyon College, Ohio. He joined the department in 1974 after receiving his MFA from the University of Colorado-Boulder. He has taught all the sculpture courses in the Department from the intro level "Three Dimensional Design" to the more unusual courses such as "Art with a Function" and "Art with Four Legs." His work also deals with the third dimension from outdoor public commissions to smaller studio pieces. "Learning to be an artist is a very complex process. Learning to enjoy Art by trying to make it is also complex. Once it is started the process has to be practiced and explored - perhaps for a lifetime. As an Artist/Teacher I think it is important to share my studio trials and tribulations for art-making is always fun but rarely easy. It is also important to share the joys of this activity - those times when an idea in combination with carefully selected and worked materials yields a product I am proud to exhibit. It is also a joy to help students dig deeply into themselves, then to use all their energies and resourcefulness to create a work they never thought possible." He has shown in Oregon at the Laura Russo Gallery as well as the Art Gym, Maryhurst College, the Corvallis Art Center, and Artquake 1994, Portland. As a promising emerging artist, Sean Cain has caught the eye of the public and has warranted reviews in Willamette Week, Artweek, the Oregonian, and Reflex. He works in a classical tradition rendering the figure in statuesque poses depicted in rather stark light that allows for a beautiful chiaroscuro. Using the paint thinly, layering like washes, he paints colors which enhance the atmospheric other-worldliness of his work. Cain combines surrealism, humor, and a high level of craftsmanship to attain a compelling and heroic narrative. (1970) Phil Tyler was born in Alabama. Eventually he moved west and settled on a small ranch at the base of Mt. Hood. A painter of the cowboy life, his subjects come from personal experience with that life. HORSEMAN focuses on a lone horsemen cantering across a pale green, light-washed space. The background is simply a wash of color which modulates from soft green to soft brown. The horse and rider are carefully and lovingly delineated from curb bit, to girth, to chaps.
