This fountain consists of a concrete stair that holds several large boulders. The water cascades down the stairs, around the boulders, and fills a small pool at the bottom., Alice Wingwall is a blind artist. She suffers from retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary degenerative disease of the eye. She relies to a great deal on her other senses in envisioning her art, and designed the fountain in the courtyard by the sounds water makes when falling on rocks. Wingwall earned an M.F.A. in sculpture from UC Berkeley and was a professor of sculpture and director of the studio arts program at Wellesley College. She has explored many different mediums, and she trained in stained-glass fabrication in Paris. "Sampo" is a mysterious object often referred to in the mythological songs of the Finnish. According to the artist, the sampo is forged by the creator-smith Ilmarinen for Louhi, the hag-goddess of the underwold, to be used to harvest crops. This is Imonen's interpretation of that mythological machine. <br> The mammoth cedar logs in the sculpture were salvaged from a forest fire near Roseburg. The steel used is also recycled in that it was purchased as a "second," --purchased but never used by the original buyer. Four large sculptures placed in an open air plaze between The Urban Center and Academic and Student Recreation Center., The sculptor John Aiken studied at the Chelsea School of Art (1968-73) and British School at Rome (1973-75). In 1986 he was appointed Head of Sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. His interest in military architecture and in archaeology underpins much of his work, German fortifications in Northern France being for him ‘the most impressive sculpture park in the world.’ He has exhibited extensively and has been awarded many commissions including a 40 metre frieze in Belfast City Hospital (1986), a steel sculpture for the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and two monumental sculptures in Portuguese granite for the Department of the Environment.
