The sing began in 1936 as a part of the college's homecoming festivities and was held in the MU Lounge. In 1951 it was opened to include sororities, moved to Gill Coliseum, and became part of Mom's Weekend in the spring.

During this time he wrote three novels: The Natural (1952), The Assistant (1957), and A New Life (1961) as well as a collection of short stories, called The Magic Barrel (1959) for which he received the National Book Award. He was presented OSU's Distinguished Service Award in 1969.
