Johns attended OSU from 1970 to 1974. Though he came to OSU to study agriculture, he discovered a passion for photography. After graduating from Oregon State and earning a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota, Johns embarked on a successful career as a photojournalist. He was named the National Newspaper Photographer of the Year in 1979. After a number of years as a freelance photographer, he joined National Geographic’s staff in 1995. In 2003 he became editor-in-chief of National Geographic magazine. That same year he was also named as one of the twenty-five most important photographers in the world. Johns was OSU’s 2005 commencement speaker.
Alice Biddle was a member of OAC's first graduating class in 1870. She completed the college curriculum in three years, and graduated at the age of 16. The formal title of this 1983 bronze statue, created by artist Kirk St. Maur, is "The Quest."
Ragland received All-American honorable mention honors in 2001 and 2002, and was the Pac-10 Player of the year in 2001. She led the Pac-10 in scoring in 2002 at 19.9 points per game. She was the first OSU player selected in the WNBA draft, taken as the 28th overall pick in 2002 by the Seattle Storm. This photo appeared in the 2002 Beaver yearbook.
Simonton rushed for 234 yards and three touchdowns against the No. 7 Trojans in this 31-21 win for the Beavers. Simonton lead the Beavers to an 11-1 record that season, including a 41-9 win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Simonton is OSU’s all-time leading rusher at 5,044 yards, which he accumulated in the 1998 through 2001 seasons. He played professionally in the NFL’s European league and briefly in the NFL and Canadian Football League. Houshmandzadeh played at OSU during the 1999 and 2000 seasons, and later played professionally for many years with the Cincinnati Bengals.
