A hand-colored photograph of a boat landing, used as a postcard with the heading "Boat Landing on Columbia River, Hood River, Oregon" in red at the top. In the background of the photograph on the far side of the river are low hills and trees.On the near side, a stern wheeler dominates the scene. To either side of it are a barge and another smaller steamboat; behind the barge is the tip of a sail. The landing is across from a small island.The sternwheeler appears to have just arrived; a small crowd is on the upper deck and a larger crowd on the lower. A man or boy sits on the edge of the lower deck with his legs hanging over the water. On the bank a crowd of about two dozen men and women and a couple of horses is gathered. The women wear long dresses. Some of the men are in suits and others in work clothes. To the left of the landing is a white wooden gate and a barbed-wire fence.

The rounded hill to the right is heavily wooded with conifers. High-water marks can be seen at the base of Rooster Rock.

A dramatic black and white view of a stern wheeler identified as the "Hassalo" being taken over the Cascade Rapids by Captain J. W. Troup. The boat steams through whitecaps, plumes of smoke trailing from its smokestacks. In the foreground, a crowd is gathered among large boulders along the river. Most of the men wear dark lounge suits and boater hats; the women mostly wear light dresses, and the ties of their hats hang down their backs. Some of the men are waving hats or handkerchiefs to cheer the paddlewheeler on. It appears that there is also a large crowd on the opposite shore. The Hassalo was built at The Dalles in 1880 for the Oregon Railway & Navigation Co. She worked the river til 1888, advertised as the fastest river boat in the world. Captain Troup took her over the Cascades Rapids on May 26, 1888, after which she was sent to Puget Sound. When she returned in 1892 she was converted to a towboat.

A tinted photographic postcard. The legend in brown at upper right reads "Steamer Bailey Gatzert on excursion trip up Columbia River, landing near Collins Hot Springs, Washington." All three decks of the ship seem to be packed with people. The steamer is a few feet from the near shore, and a plank has been laid out for a gangway. On the shore at left a man in a cap contemplates the steamer. At right a group of six men and one woman are exploring the bank. The woman wears a long full dress and appears to be wearing a hat with wings. A black-and-white dog lingers near the edge of the water. This bank of the river appears to be mostly covered with flowers or grass. At the far right is a deciduous tree. On the far shore the hills, forested with evergreens, slope steeply down to the river. Near the left edge of the picture is a bare slope with red-tinted dirt. It looks as though a road or railway line runs along this far bank. The Bailey Gatzert, named after the first Jewish mayor of Seattle, was built in 1890 and used in the excursion trade along the Columbia River from 1892-1895. She was claimed to be the fastest ship on the water. By 1930 she was no longer in service.

A view of the Columbia River shore at Arlington, Oregon, on January 12, 1909. The Columbia River is frozen. In the foreground is the white riverbank, with a large boulder to the left. Near the shore on the right of the photo is a pier, with a sailboat at its end. In the center we see a stern-wheeler. A long rope leads out from it and is coiled on the frozen river. A group of five men stand nearby, close to a rectangular area of water that has been freed of ice. Their attention is on a sixth man who is standing in a rowboat pushing at the ice with a long pole. One of the group on the river also carries a long pole. The writing on the photograph says the temperature is 20 below zero and the first time in 24 years the river had frozen over.

Passengers or crew can be seen on its three decks; along both sides of the locks are small groups of men and women watching its passage. The water is calm; it is a dry sunny day with puffy clouds. A lawn stretches off to the left of the photograph. Across the river from the locks forested hills rise up.

A tinted photographic postcard. The caption at the top reads "Steamer Dalles City, D. P. & A. Nav. Co., in Cascade Locks, Columbia River." The paddlewheel of the Dalles City is clearly seen as the ship makes her way towards the lock. A few people are visible on the deck of the boat, and others are along both sides of the canal. A series of stairs follows the water. On the near side of the canal a beached rowboat is tied up, and the area is strewn with rocks. Beyond the locks is the roof of a building. In the distance are forested hills and mountains.

At the left of the photo, a steamboat can be seen, its smoke streaking out to the right. Across the river is a low line of deciduous trees colored with autumn's oranges and reds. Behind them rise mountains clothed with green trees. At the right of the photo behind the closest set of hills to the river can be seen Table Mountain. Its top is completely flat and it appears to be mostly treeless.

A black and white view of three steamboats in the water approaching Cascade Locks on the Columbia River. The paddlewheel of the large stern wheeler to the left of the photo can be clearly seen. This ship is much larger than the other two at right, and has been identified as the "Bailey Gatzert". One of the other steamers has been identified as the "Charles R. Spencer". Their smokestacks all belch smoke. In the river some small islands can be seen. On the further shore, a low, well-forested riverbank with a settlement of houses rises to wooded hills. To the center right of the picture the locks are seen. The Cascade Locks were completed in 1896, and submerged in 1938 as a result of the construction of the Bonneville Dam.

A black and white view of a steam paddlewheel ship identified as the stern wheeler "Albany" is seen near the shore of the Columbia River at the Big Eddy upstream from the Dalles. Smoke rises from the ship's smokestack, and the paddlewheel is raising a cloud of spray. On the side of the ship is a ladder descending from the upper deck. At the prow several figures are visible; they seem to be communicating with people on the shore. Oddly-shaped low hills rise in the background, half-covered with trees.
