Circular building to left of picture. Another very interesting place at the Battery is the Aquarium. It was formerly old Castle Garden and was once used as the immigrant receiving station. Through its doors millions of our citizens have passed. It was built originally as a fort in 1812 and was named after DeWitt Clinton, then Governor of the State. Later it was used as a place of entertainment and seated 8,000 persons. Here Jenny Lind sang and many famous visitors from Europe to the United States were received here: Lafayette, the Belgian king, Pershing, the Prince of Wales and others. It is now under the management of the New York Zoological Society and used as an aquarium. In it is perhaps the finest collection of living fishes to be found in the world. It is open every day and is free to the public. The Whitehall building (to the extreme right of the picture) is one of the great office buildings. The original building was 20 stories high, but the later addition is 34 stories high. In it are the offices of many large commercial concerns. Headquarters for shipping, export, coal and oil businesses. There is a very good restaurant in the top of this building.
