Mary (Powell) Butz (foreground, left) was the wife of Earl L. Butz. Earl L. Butz (foreground, second from left) was United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1971-1976. J. Ralph Shay (foreground, third from right) was a Professor of Botany and Assistant Dean of Research at Oregon State from 1966-1981.
Dr. Henry P. Hansen was an Instructor and Professor of Botany from 1939-1949. He became Dean of the Graduate School in 1949 and served until 1971. Dr. Larry Boersma was a Distinguished Professor of Crop and Soil Science from 1960-1999.
Roy Alton Young (left), a professor of plant pathology, was appointed in 1966 as Oregon State University's Dean of Research with responsibility for campus-wide research coordination. He served as the university's acting president for one year until the arrival of Robert MacVicar in July 1970. He then resumed his research coordination duties as the vice president for research and graduate studies until 1976. David Nicodemus (right) was a Physics professor, College of Science administrator, and Dean of Faculty at OSU from 1950 to 1986. Nicodemus also served as a physicist at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory from 1943 to 1946, assisting with the Manhattan Project.
