Francois Archibald Gilfillan was officially appointed as the acting president of Oregon State College in September 1941 after the resignation of President Ballard; however, he had been serving as the chair of the Administrative Council and carrying out the president's campus duties since October 1940. Ballard led the college through the uncertain months that marked the beginning of World War II until August L. Strand's arrival in October 1942.
Kay Conrad became Associate Director of Admissions in 1978, later serving as Director from 1991-1997. Along with her husband, Alan Robinson, Conrad offers an annual scholarship to upperclassmen in the Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics department.
Sam Stern was the Dean of Education from 2002-2011. Stern taught courses in adult education and teacher preparation. Stern first came to OSU in 1981 and has since formed beneficial projects including the restoration of Education Hall.
George Wilcox Peavy, Dean of Forestry, was appointed acting president of Oregon State College in 1932 when William J. Kerr was chosen as the first chancellor of the Oregon State System of Higher Education. Peavy became Oregon State College's seventh president in 1934, the first OSC faculty member to also serve as president of the institution. He remained dean of forestry during his presidency until his retirement in 1940, upon which he was appointed as dean emeritus and president emeritus of OSC.
