Description
Fourteen Native American men on horeback are riding through an encampment. All are wearing some sort of headdress and tribal costume. Some are carrying staffs with feather adornment. The horses have beaded harnesses. They are riding through a meadow edged by a line of trees where people stand watching. There are five tipis spaced along the tree line on the meadow. On the opposite side of the photo is a photographer dressed in European-American clothing and a camera. Some of the people watching are wearing cowboy hats and are wrapped in blankets.

An outside photograph of two Native American men standing in a campsite. Both men are wrapped in what have been identified as Pendleton blankets. There are three tipis in the campsite. The tipi farthest back shows a darkened canvas. The middle tipi has smoke coming out of it; it is composed from layered tuli mats and canvas. There are rough-hewn poles lying on the outside of both tipis, as well as internal frame poles that extrude from the top. The third tipi -- on the photograph's right side -- is made entirely of canvas and shows no external poles. There is an opening in the top for smoke to escape; the top has been noticeably darkened from the smoke. Behind the three tipis lies a dark, unidentified, man-made structure; it is surrounded by brush and appears to have a ladder either leaning against it or sticking through an opening. Both men are wearing hats; one man appears to be walking away from the tipis while the other is leaning against what has been identified as an oar. Behind the man with the oar is a tipi opening; there is a tule mat covering the doorway and miscellaneous articles lying on the ground. There are two dogs in the campsite. In the surrounding area are cottonwood trees and pine trees. The cottonwood trees are leafless and there may be patches of snow on the ground. All around the campsite are shrubs, and a gently rising hillside can be seen in the background.

Description
A white man wearing a dark felt hat, wool jacket, white shirt, and dark pants sits under a striped tipi-style canvas tent behind a wooden packing box that is serving him as a desk. The man has been identified as Lee Moorhouse. He has a bushy moustache and wears glasses; his hair is cropped short and his hairline receding. The sides of the tent are rolled up and tied to the poles inside, and he sits framed by two poles. Tied to the pole on the right is a flat leather bag. In the background trees are visible; the deciduous trees have leaves. Inside the tent behind the man a pile of striped blankets and other gear is visible. The man's attention is on his hands; his head is bent down and he appears to be whittling a short piece of wood with a knife. On the top of his "desk" are laid out pieces of paper. A small piece of money is in the corner of the desk, near a receipt book. To the right on the ground in front and to the side of the "desk" are an open umbrella and some type of wooden bin, cart, or wheelbarrow. In front of the packing box is a pile of gear including a large graniteware bucket, a smaller graniteware pitcher or coffeepot, a graniteware or cast iron dish with a lid, and what looks like a lard bucket with a white salt shaker on top.

The photographer has identified the Native American man as Poker Jim. He is wearing a cowboy hat and is wrapped in a Pendleton blanket that reaches his ankles. He is holding the reins of a barebacked horse. The Euro-American is wearing a suit and overcoat and has both hands in his coat pockets. He also is wearing a derby hat. There are six visible external poles leaning against the tipi, presumably to hold down the woven mats. To the men's right, leaning against the tipi, is a homemade ladder that appears to be made of similar poles. The background shows a hint of hillside, along with cottonwood trees and a lone pine tree. At the base of the pine tree is a stack of firewood.
